Her approach is humanistic and generous and asks viewers to self-reflect and re-evaluate their relationship to the world. McCullough investigates the conceptual gaps between the lens of a camera to the outside world. These gaps represent opportunities for the artist to take playful risks, often without knowing the outcome of the work. Shot in rural Austria, the two-channel video installation H.E.R. (2016-2019) expresses the internal thoughts and emotions of a character named Her. As the scenes move between in and out of doors Her’s actions of care are mundane and every day - from raking to hanging laundry. A series of photographic portraits, intentionally shot with a variety of cameras and using both film and digital, reveal individuals who take care of the land in subtle and genuine ways. The video and sculpture work The Rails They Traveled, The Mountains They Saw, The Things They Carry (2019) offers the viewer an opportunity to meditate on travel, transience, and the experience of moving through the landscape. Throughout time women’s identities have been examined, as a whole, and within individual cultures. In this captured moment, her hair is an identifier of ethnicity and a DNA trait that has evolved over time. The ‘natural look’ was once seen negatively but has developed to signify ‘empowerment’ and ‘pride’. By unraveling the scarf, the woman reveals her hair as the internal thoughts about black self-image are projected through spoken word.Maeve Jackson (filmmaker), Destinny Fletcher (poet &amp; audio vocals), and Nadirah Dotson (actor).
