‘the beautiful’: The Stories She Tells

As she removed the fabric from her head she provoked questions of identity and culture with in her mind. Throughout time women’s identities have been examined, as a whole, and within individual cultures. In this captured moment, her hair is an identifier of ethnicity and a DNA trait that has evolved over time. The ‘natural look’ was once seen negatively but has developed to signify ‘empowerment’ and ‘pride’. By unraveling the scarf, the woman reveals her hair as the internal thoughts about black self-image are projected through spoken word.

Behind the project: Through a series of conversations between friends around the topic of beauty and self-image this project emerged.
